Since 2005, LSU Communication Across the Curriculum (LSU CxC) has worked alongside faculty within the disciplines to advance students’ learning of course content and essential communication skills. LSU’s focus on high-impact communication-intensive teaching and learning helps students gain transferable writing, speaking, visual, and technological communication skills that enable them to excel as learners, citizens, scholars, collaborators, contributors, and leaders.
What We Do
CxC facilitates a comprehensive approach to improving undergraduate education across the LSU campus through:
- Faculty training, consultation services, resources, and awards
- Student peer coaching, learning technologies, support, and recognition programs
- Communication-Intensive Course development, certification, support, and assessment
Our Approach: Communication-Intensive Teaching Practices
At LSU, embedding communication skills training directly into courses doesn't just improve student communication—it deepens their learning of the subject matter. We call this high-impact approach Communication-Intensive (C-I) teaching.
In C-I Courses, students don't just memorize facts; they learn to explain complex ideas, present findings, create compelling visuals, and engage a variety of audiences. This evolution of Writing Across/Within the Disciplines (WAC/WID) blends content with communication-based activities, emphasizing active learning, critical thinking, and student engagement. It aligns with all eight key elements of the American Association of Colleges and Universities’ (AACU) High-Impact Practices and the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) Career Readiness Competencies.
The Team Behind LSU CxC
Our multidisciplinary team includes teachers, researchers, scholars, and practitioners who continuously study how students learn best. We partner with faculty across campus to test new methods, develop innovative approaches, and share what works with the broader academic community. The CxC Team is made up of 16 full-time staff, two graduate assistants, and 44 undergraduate coaches.
Funding and Support
LSU CxC operates through collaborative funding from the University, participating colleges, regional and national grants, and private donations. This diverse support allows us to adapt and grow while maintaining our commitment to student success.
CxC raises the bar on innovation, commitment of resources, and state-of-the-art execution...and is a program to which other universities should aspire.
